3-Year-Old Boy Accidentally Shots Himself in Orangeburg

ORANGEBURG, S.C. (WOLO) – A child found a gun inside a vehicle and accidentally shot himself Friday afternoon in Orangeburg, authorities say.

The 3-year-old was shot in the upper body around 1:45 p.m. at Sunshine Recycling.

Investigators say, the child’s father was having car trouble and called his wife to pick him up.

He removed his handgun and placed it in his wife’s car with their three-year-old son, deputies say.

The shooting happened as the man sought to find a part to repair his vehicle at the vehicle parts section of the recycling plant.

“At this time, we are praying and thinking about this child who we believe at this point shot himself after a series of events that placed him next to a loaded weapon,” the Sheriff Leroy Ravenell said. “It’s just tragic and we’re pulling for him to make a full recovery.”

The child was airlifted to an area hospital.

No charges have been filed in the shooting.
