Woman’s Quick Thinking Thwarts Sexual Assault

ORANGEBURG, S.C. (WOLO) – A Cope woman is being credited with stopping her 36-year-old neighbor from sexually assaulting her while her children were home, the Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office said Friday.

The victim was at home reading when deputies say, Joseph Ross, came to the residence around 1 a.m. Thursday.

Deputies say the victim believed the late-night visitor may have been a relative, so she opened the door.

Ross forced his way inside the home at knife-point and repeatedly demanded the woman remove her clothing, deputies say.

The victim was able to convince Ross to go outside away from her children managed to shut the door and lock it.

During a court hearing Friday, Ross’ bond was denied.

He’s charged with first-degree burglary.
