Seventh Annual Indie Grits Festival Announces Dates, Schedule of Events

COLUMBIA, S.C. (January 21, 2013)---Indie Grits Festival, hosted by the Nickelodeon Theatre in Columbia, S.C., will be held April 12 – 21, 2013. The festival offers Southern filmmakers unique exhibition opportunities and festival attendees will find 10 days full of a unique combination of engaging cultural events unmatched in the Southeast.

In its seventh year, Indie Grits empowers all levels of Southern filmmakers with an independent mentality and far-reaching artistic scope. In 2010, Indie Grits was also named one of the world’s 20 coolest film festivals by Movie Maker magazine. This year will mark the first Indie Grits Festival based in the Nickelodeon Theatre’s newly renovated home at 1607 Main Street.

“In addition to the films, last year Indie Grits grew to include the best music, food and craft Columbia has to offer, and this year, we’re excited that again our festival will last 10 days, but festival attendees will find that we’ve organized Indie Grits so that you won’t have to choose one event over another,” said Andy Smith, Executive Director of the Nickelodeon Theatre.

NEW THIS YEAR: Films will be shown each evening of the festival, but the first half of the festival (April 12 – 16) will feature cultural opportunities including Spork in Hand Puppet Slam, Slow Food Columbia’s Sustainable Chef Showcase and Cinemovements, a unique collaboration pairing the South Carolina Philharmonic and conductor Morihiko Nakahara with commissioned filmmakers and their original films.

The second half of the festival (April 17 – 21), all Indie Grits competition films will screen, often with talkbacks with filmmakers.

Indie Grits Festival has a tradition of using downtown Columbia spaces exclusively for the festival’s events, and this year, as the Nickelodeon Theatre is in its renovated new home at 1607 Main Street, Indie Grits will also host events and film screenings at the nearby Tapp’s Arts Center, which will make most festival events central and convenient for festival attendees.
