The Best of South Carolina Contemporary Dance Company
On Thursday, May 23rd, at 7:30 pm at the Township Auditorium, the South Carolina Contemporary Dance Company will feature the most striking moments and excerpts of Miriam Barbosa's choreography over the past 10 years. This choreographic work includes:
o "Catharsis" - A collaboration between Miriam Barbosa and Visual Artist Marcelo Novo with contemporary tango by Piazzola. A work in three acts that includes upside down tango through aerial dance, creating a theatrical and metaphorical meaning to the story line.
o "The Chemistry of Contemporary Dance" - A piece inspired by The Chemistry of Contemporary Colors, and exhibition of Contemporary African-American Art by Alvin Loving. This choreography consists of two parts - "Synthetic Dances" to music by John Valerio, and "Blood Memories" to Prokofiev's contemporary music. With giant background projections of Alvin Loving's colorful paintings, the dancers intertwine through fabric and spiraling motions.
o "Visions of the Amazon" - Inspired by Ms. Barbosa's native South American roots, this choreography reflects images from Amazon life, moved by original score from Brazilian Contemporary Composer Villa Lobos.
o "Spanish Rhapsody" - Choreographed to Maurice Ravel's score, the dance depicts a surrealistic plasticity on stage. Both the composer and the choreographer were attracted to a certain quality of Spanish music and dance that weaves throughout the score and the movements.
Sultry, jazz vocalist, Eboniramm, will perform with her trio for the show and award winning artist, Lauren Maurer, will feature her tango paintings and some very special new paintings created specifically for the show which promises to be an outstanding evening of dance, visual and musical art.
