Columbia Residents Talk Baseball

By Rochelle Dean

(WOLO) Columbia.S.C., --

It was a first meeting allowing residents to voice their concerns and ask questions about the possibility of having a minor league team here in Columbia.

This one day after a independent firm did a study to find out if Columbia is even ready to play ball. With statistics showing the area as one of the largest markets in the country without a professional sports team, Mayor Steve Benjamin says there are several groups interested in making Columbia home.

While some had reservations about the success a minor league team would have here in the city, The Mayor says it's not only about baseball. But rather about having a facility families can enjoy at a reasonable price that can be used for multiple purposes year round.

Hardball Capital Chief Executive Officer, Jason Freier says he has been interested in the Columbia Market for quite some time. It's location and easy access to the interstate, space that would put it at least 2 blocks from area homes and it's ability to attract half a million people make Bull Street a major selling point they're willing to invest in.

This is only the beginning of several conversations the city plans to hold to make sure questions and concerns are addressed. The next meetings are as follows:
