It's been a tough 5 months for the Rawl family who gathered with Deputy Ryan's Law enforcement family as he was honored during Tuesday night's Richland County Council meeting.

Rawls' Mother Diane, described her son as a "gift" that's been lost by those who loved him most. While he was a decorated officer being awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart and the South Carolina medal of Valor, those weren't his biggest accomplishments.

Diane says he loved serving with the sheriff's department and military, proud to serve the community and his country. And took pride in being a father, husband, brother, son and friend.

Diane says her son died doing what he loved, and was even discovered with a smile on his face at the time of his death.

While the upcoming holiday season is proving to be a difficult one, Diane says they're taking it one day and one prayer at a time.
