(WOLO) COLUMBIA,S.C., --

Statistics show the city of Columbia has come a long way under the leadership of current Mayor Steve Benjamin, but his two opponents Larry Sypolt, and Moe Baddourah both believe they are the men for the job.

Sypolt and Baddourah both Columbia businessmen, announced their canidacy to run for Columbia Mayor during November's election.

Sypolt spent nearly 15 years in public service. As a former Richland County Sheriff's Deputy, Turned FBI Agent, Turned Businessman, he says his main goal as Mayor would be to strengthen law enforcement.

" i think the City is doing the best they can with what they have, but i think they definitely need to merge Columbia with the Richland County Sheriff's Department...it's something everybody would benefit from."

Meanwhile Mayor Steve Benjamin kicked off his re-election campaign with a downtown gathering, celebrating the successes he says the city has been able to achieve during his first four years, working as one city.

The Mayor says not only is crime down across the board in every sector, and the Columbia police Department fully staffed or the first time in more than a decade, Mayor Benjamin says unemployment has dropped by 3 percent, while new business along main have risen.

We made several attempts to reach out to Columbia Councilman and Businessman, Moe Baddourah to get more information about his platform, but our calls were not returned.
