The Healing Power of Pets

By Rochelle Dean

Some studies suggest they can lower your blood pressure, calm your heart rate and even brighten your mood. Now Prescription Paws and Healthy Carolina have teamed up to bring some four legged friends to the University to help students alleviate some of that stress.

USC Junior, Tyesha Jenkins knows about that all too well. The biology major with a minor in Psychology is not only has her mind on her books, but also her home.

" My mother is a non-functioning alcoholic, she has been unemployed for 4 years now and i think about my sister, she is 16 and keeping her happy."

It's a juggling act that Jenkins admits has led to bouts with anxiety, something Healthy Carolina says these therapy dogs are great at helping with.

Jenkins and dozens of others students who are gearing up for mid terms say they're willing to take advantage of any stress reliever they can get.

Healthy Carolina says a recent study suggests anxiety is the number one academic impediment to students. In response, they plan to do this during mid-terms and final exams, when stress levels are thought to be at their highest.
