Weight Control and Pregnancy

By Health Day

Many women gain more than the recommended amount of weight while they're pregnant.

In a new study published in the British Medical Journal, researchers compiled 44 earlier studies involving more than 7,000 women to see if weight control strategies during pregnancy may provide benefits.

Women who took steps to control their weight had a lower risk of preeclampsia. This is marked by high blood pressure, and it can pose a threat to both mother and child. It's more common in women who are obese.

Making diet changes appeared to be especially helpful, compared to changing their level of physical activity or using a combination of exercise and diet.

Women who changed their diet also had a lower risk of gestational diabetes and high blood pressure, as well as lower risk of premature birth.

Remember, women should always talk to their doctor before making any diet or exercise changes when they're expecting.
