Stroke is the fourth leading cause of death here in the U.S., taking more than 137-thousand lives each year.
Now there's news that eating more fiber might be a mighty stroke fighter!
Researchers analyzed eight comprehensive stroke studies published between 1990-2012...They paid particularly close attention to the amount of fiber participants reported eating ...and the incidence of first stroke, both hemorrhagic and ischemic, the two most common types of stroke.
Researchers found that each seven-gram increase in total daily fiber intake was associated with a 7 percent decrease in first-time stroke risk.
For reference, just one serving of whole wheat pasta, or two servings of fruits or vegetables, provide about 7 grams of fiber. The American Heart Associations recommends 25 grams of fiber per day.
The next step for researchers is to focus on the best fiber for stroke prevention.
