Poor Taylor, He Gets No Respect

Tools

By Anderson Burns

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) -- He could be thought of as the historical Rodney Dangerfield of Columbia. You pass him every day. You ride on him every day (sort of). You owe him the Capital City, but do you even know who he is?

It's time for a Hidden Columbia. Check it out in the video player.

That was a very disrespectful ending. Did anyone bother to contact someone from the church to find out why the doors are locked or why the signs are there? If they had, they would have discovered that the sign is near the air conditioning unit which was just vandalized like many in Columbia. That would have been just one question gladly answered. The congregation is very proud of its connection to Taylor and very conscious of what the church owes to that connection. You pose a question of respect for the man but then show your own brand of disrespect for something that proudly bears his name.

I WOULD HAVE TO AGREE WITH LYNN... YOU MAY NOT HAVE INTENDED FOR THIS TO SOUND SO NEGATIVE IN REGARDS TO THE TAYLOR EVANGELICAL METHODIST CHURCH ...BUT IT DOES. We have had several break ins and just a few weeks ago our ac unit was stripped. I guess people really have no self worth when they are robbing from the house of GOD. Makes you really wonder what has happened to our society when we are taking from our churches.. another story...another day... how about you report on that??

I don't think it was disrespectful. In spite of the signs on the church grounds, it doesn't look like his burial site is well taken care of-especially compared to Wade Hampton's plot.

I think the members of this church are owed an apology. I think Mr. Burns should drive around to every church he can and see how many churches keep their doors unlocked during non-service hours. I bet he wont find many. Not a good reason to insult a church.

If the congregation is as proud and thankful as said you would think that it wouldn't look so ghetto. Maybe that is why the ac unit has been stolen. Sorry to tell you that this house of GOD looks abandoned.

Sorry to tell you that this house of GOD looks abandoned. As far as respect, a church is not supposed to be respected as to who founded it. It should be respected because it is a house of GOD. Please clean that poor place up. Bet the congragation wouldn't have their yards looking like that.

We are proud of our little church and thankful for all that the Taylor family has given. We do lock the doors when we are not there just as you do your home. But when we are away it is to protect the gifts that have been given. I am surprised that you would find this to be ghetto Nor that it would be ok to steal from the church in any shape. Breaking into the building through the stained glass windows, taking the sound equipment and other items is no less theft. Just how would you have us take care of the graves? What would you be willling to do? I would be glad to meet with you and or happy for you to step up and do what you thing should be done.

Just because the church isn't the oldest, richest, or most well known congregation in Columbia doesn't meant that it deserves the disrespectful comments in the video or from those of you who choose to write. I don't know how many on you know where Taylor Evangelical Church is, or have spent time in that neighborhood at night, but there are many good reasons why the doors are locked during non-service hours and the signs are there. The small congregation works very hard to keep the church and cemetery looking nice, but not every church has an infinite amount of money in its coffers or unlimited volunteers to help do the work. That doesn't mean that the grave of Thomas Taylor is disrespected, just off the beaten path. Many other famous or historically significant people are buried in small, not well known cemeteries, so its not that odd. If you all are so concerned about the state of church and the grave, why don't you attend service there or volunteer to help them maintain it?

If Anderson Burns had contacted anyone with the church, he would have gotten any information he so desired. I'm sure he's not aware of the story behind the church itself, nor is he aware of the amount of time and effort that go into maintaining the church. It's a labor of love from every member of that congregation, I can assure you. Not every church is focused on it's outer image. Looks can be deceving... I'm sure Mr. Burns has never pulled beer bottles and other assorted homeless affects from the cemetery and church grounds. And I highly doubt he's checked any sort of public records, crime reports or historical background. I'd suggest Mr. Burns look in the state archives and see how many well-known Columbians are buried in small, completely unkempt cemeteries. This is a poor example of journalism and the reflection is not indicative of the values that ABC Columbia embodies.

I am Anderson Burns. Let me first apologize for any insult to your church. In my attempt to contrast the storied history of Wade Hampton with the forgotten history of Taylor, the abandoned looking church seemed an obvious illustration. I must say, however, I did try to call, several times, but when you dial the number listed, you get about 5 seconds of static (not fax machine sound) and then it hangs up on you. Believe me when I say I wish I had gotten in contact with someone from the church, as I bet your input on the story would have been a great addition. -Anderson Burns
