In the early 60s my father worked at the Air Force Reserve office that was located downtown at the time. He was a Staff Sgt assigned to the Reserve Office as an instructor. Some how his office was involved with the rocket coming to Columbia. This was at a time when space travel was a novelty. The rocket arrived on a trailer. The trailer was parked in front of the capital. Soon everyone who wanted to see the rocket had seen it. It was moved to the fairgrounds as a convient storage location. You could see it as you passed the fairgrounds on Atlas Rd. Eventually the fair gound staff errected it
