One man is dead and a Dillon police officer has been injured after a crash.

Authorities said officer Jacob Richardson was driving to back up a Dillon County deputy around 2:20 a.m. Sunday when a car collided with his cruiser on state Highway 9 a few miles west of Dillon.

Troopers say one of the four passengers in the 2011 Mitsubishi was killed. Richardson, who was wearing a seatbelt, was taken to a hospital in Florence. He is expected to survive.

A special team of Highway Patrol troopers is investigating the crash.
