ACLU wants easy name change for married men too

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — A civil rights organization is demanding South Carolina make it as easy for men who change their names when they get married to get new driver's licenses as they do for women.

The American Civil Liberties Union wrote a letter Thursday to the Department of Motor Vehicles on behalf of a Travelers Rest man seeking a new license.

The group says Jason Baize took his wife's name after their June wedding and brought his new Social Security and marriage license to the DMV last month. The ACLU says that is all the proof women need when they take their husband's name.

But the ACLU says workers told Baize he would have to get a court order to have his name changed on his license.

DMV officials didn't immediately comment.
