WINNSBORO, N.C. (AP) — A Winnsboro public safety officer being sought after his estranged wife was shot and wounded is hospitalized with what's called a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

SLED spokesman Thom Berry said officers were searching a church-affiliated campground near the town of Great Falls around 6:30 p.m. Thursday when 43-year-old Officer Michael Bernard Roseboro began talking with Fairfield County Chief Deputy Keith Lewis.

Berry said it was during the conversation that Roseboro shot himself in the chest. He was taken to Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia for treatment.

Lewis says authorities believe Roseboro was traveling in a patrol car when he shot his estranged wife as she stood on the sidewalk Sunday night. She remains hospitalized at Palmetto Richland.

Berry said Roseboro will be charged with attempted murder in the woman's shooting.
