Deputies: Man found in burned Gaston home was shot

GASTON, S.C. (AP) — Authorities say someone shot to death a Gaston man, then set his home on fire.

Lexington County Sheriff James Metts says firefighters found the badly burned body of 60-year-old Jimmy Lee Helms on a couch Saturday morning.

But Coroner Harry O. Harman says authorities also determined Helms had been shot several times in the upper body.

Investigators said Helms was shot between 12 a.m. and 6 a.m. Saturday and was dead before the fire started in his home.
