SC officials unveiling Bethune license plateCOLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — A South Carolina educator and civil rights leaders is being honored with a license plate. A ceremony is scheduled for the Statehouse on Tuesday to unveil the plate in honor of Mary McLeod Bethune. Legislators approved the specialty plate last year. Fees from plate sales support a museum and natural trail named after Bethune, as well as tourism in her hometown of Mayesville. Bethune established the school now known as Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach, Fla., and founded the National Council of Negro Women. She also advised several U.S. presidents. |
