COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — A former South Carolina police officer has been arrested on charges he destroyed evidence related to a decades-old murder case.

Solicitor Walt Wilkins says 53-year-old George Ralph Bobo was arrested Tuesday and charged with obstructing justice and misconduct in office.

Bobo recently resigned as Mauldin's police chief but was previously an officer in Simpsonville. It was there in 1984 authorities discovered the body of 20-year-old Cassandra Johnson in a wooded area. She had been stabbed multiple times.

Wilkins says Bobo is accused of destroying physical evidence related to Johnson's case. Wilkins wouldn't say what the evidence was but says Bobo's alleged crime has compromised his ability to prosecute Johnson's killer.

A message left with an attorney said to be representing Bobo was not immediately returned.
