Clyburn to deliver lecture on forebears at USC

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — U.S. Rep. James Clyburn is speaking on the legacy of the nation's African-American forebears at the University of South Carolina.

The South Carolina Democrat is delivering the Robert Smalls Lecture Thursday at 7:30 p.m. It is free and open to the public.

The university says the school's African American Studies Program established the lecture series in 1997 to share its research and scholarship with the community.

The series is named for Robert Smalls, a South Carolina slave, Civil War hero and congressman who had a significant impact on the state's political, educational and economic reform.
