Gates, Rucker to address Univ. of SC grads

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates and singer Darius Rucker are among those scheduled to speak at upcoming commencement ceremonies at the University of South Carolina.

The school says Gates will address graduates May 10. J. Brady Anderson, a former ambassador to Tanzania and the former administrator of the U.S. Agency for International Development, is also receiving an honorary doctorate degree that day.

On May 11, Rucker is speaking to graduates of the Honors College and College of Arts and Sciences. The country music artist and former frontman for Hootie and the Blowfish will also receive an honorary doctor of music degree.

Phil Lader, former U.S. ambassador to the United Kingdom and former Winthrop University president, will also address graduates May 11.
