Ex-DEW director hired to recruit vets to SC State

ORANGEBURG, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina State University has hired the former director of the state's employment agency to help recruit veterans to enroll at the Orangeburg school.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reports (http://bit.ly/YVHtos) that interim President Cynthia Warrick announced that Abraham Turner had been hired during a meeting Thursday of the board's budget committee.

Turner resigned last month as director of the Department of Employment and Workforce. The departure followed weeks of criticism from legislators about the ending of one-on-one help at rural offices.

Turner's resignation also came a day after senators demanded answers for why the agency, since August, had given raises to dozens of employees totaling nearly $440,000, but opted to cut one-on-one help for people seeking benefits in 17 rural offices statewide.
