SC trooper named interim Chesterfield sheriff

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Gov. Nikki Haley has named a state trooper the interim sheriff in Chesterfield County.

Haley signed an executive order Friday naming 47-year-old Robert I. Lee to take over as sheriff.

The appointment was made after Sheriff Sam Parker was removed after he was indicted last month. Lee will serve until the indictment against Parker is dropped or he is disqualified from office and an election can be held.

Lee will step down from the Highway Patrol while sheriff, but will be re-hired as a trooper when a new sheriff takes over. Lee has been with the patrol 23 years.

Parker was charged with four counts of misconduct in office and two counts of furnishing contraband to inmates. Authorities say he gave favors to state inmates staying at the county jail.
