Suspect killed in chase with Lexington deputies

PELION, S.C. (AP) — An assault suspect has died after a chase with authorities in Lexington County.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol says the crash happened just before 2 a.m. Monday near Pelion.

Trooper Tony Keller says a man driving a car ran off the right side of the road and died after hitting a utility pole.

Authorities say 46-year-old Ellis Scarborough was not wearing a seatbelt. Sheriff James Metts says deputies had been looking for Scarborough after a female friend reported he had punched her and kicked her in the face.

Deputies tried to pull Scarborough over at a traffic stop, but he drove away, and the chase began.

The Highway Patrol and Lexington County authorities are investigating.
