West Columbia police shoot, kill suspect


WEST COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — State police are investigating the death of a man shot by West Columbia officers.

Authorities said officers responded to a call of a man threatening someone with a handgun just after 11 p.m. Monday.

Police say they fired on the suspect after he pulled a handgun from his waistband. The man was later identified as 48-year-old Eliakim Tipan Shabazz of Cayce.

The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating the shooting. The officer involved wasn't hurt, and police say he will get counseling.
