Man awaiting murder trial dies in Sumter jail
SUMTER, S.C. (AP) — Authorities say a 42-year-old man awaiting trial on a murder charge in a Sumter County jail has died, apparently of natural causes.
Sumter County Coroner Harvin Bullock told The Item of Sumter (http://bit.ly/16QeMfE ) that Christopher Rodko was found not breathing in his cell at the Sumter-Lee Regional Detention Center on Sunday.
Bullock says Rodko's body showed no signs of foul play.
Investigators say Rodko killed his girlfriend's sister after the two argued about cigarettes. Authorities say 35-year-old Ginger McLeod was shot several times, including three shots fired as the gunman stood over her body.
Rodko's lawyer said the shooting was in self-defense after McLeod tried to attack her sister.
