SC State gets accreditation warning

ORANGEBURG, S.C. (AP) — The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools has issued a warning to South Carolina State University about standards for its governing board and financial resources.

The Times and Democrat of Orangeburg reports (http://bit.ly/11QZ7Ht ) that new college President Thomas Elzey says he's confident the concerns will be resolved. Elzey says the warning won't threaten anyone's degree or the university's standing.

He says he was notified Thursday and the college is being asked to respond to deficiencies in materials it sent earlier.

The agency has been in touch with the college since April asking about the school's financial base, board policy on conflicts of interest and governance issues.

Interim President Cynthia Warrick's administration prepared a response last month. Elzey says he doesn't know where that report fell short.
