ORANGEBURG, S.C. (AP) — An employee at the Orangeburg County Treasurer's Office has been arrested after authorities say she stole thousands of dollars of public money.

State Law Enforcement Division agents charged 41-year-old Vickie Haynes with embezzlement of public funds Thursday. She faces up to 10 years in prison if she's convicted.

Authorities say Haynes took the money between April 2012 and January. Investigators say she then wrote personal checks to try and cover the amount she stole.

SLED agents did not give the exact amount they think Haynes took, but said during eight months she deposited $144,000 into her personal bank account when her annual salary was just $23,500.

A phone listing for Haynes could not be found and it was not known if she had a lawyer.
