COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — The interim police chief in Columbia says he hopes to buy a gyrocopter to help with vehicle chases, searches for missing people and suspects and traffic control.

The State newspaper reported (http://bit.ly/12GNyqX) that interim Chief Ruben Santiago wants to buy the aircraft, which is smaller than a helicopter.

He estimates the cost at between $70,000 and $100,000, most of which would be paid for with proceeds seized from suspects who are convicted. The department also would apply for a grant.

The Columbia City Council would have to approve the purchase.

Santiago says the department now has two pilots who only need several additional hours of training to be certified to fly the gyrocopter.
