BATESBURG-LEESVILLE, S.C. (AP) — Investigators say they are still trying to figure out what happened at a Lexington County home where a 45-year-old man who had been drinking alcohol ran over his girlfriend.

Deputies say Charlie Roof and 49-year-old Mary Tucker were inside Tucker's SUV on Thursday when they began arguing near where the woman's family was having an Independence Day party in Batesburg-Leesville.

Authorities say Tucker somehow ended up outside the SUV and was run over. Investigators don't know if it was an accident or intentional.

Deputies say Roof was standing over his girlfriend's body when they arrived and smelled of alcohol.

Roof is charged with felony driving under the influence resulting in death. He remains in jail with a $200,000 bond, and it wasn't known if he had an attorney.
