SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) — A martial arts instructor in Spartanburg is offering a free self-defense class for women.

Spartanburg County deputies say Rick Lee, owner and chief instructor at Spartanburg Martial Arts, is scheduled to put on the free class on Saturday.

The class is open to anyone age 16 and up.

Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright has encouraged people, particularly women, to defend themselves. Wright urged women to get concealed weapons permits after a woman was attacked while walking her dog at a park in October 2011.

Wright suggested that women carry a .45-caliber weapon so accuracy would not be important. He also said it would be better for women to carry a gun rather than mace.
