Thousands show up at SC Zimmerman trial protest

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Several thousand people have participated in a protest at the South Carolina Statehouse over the verdict in the George Zimmerman trial.

Organizers met at the Statehouse on Saturday morning. After remarks from people including state Rep. Leon Howard and a performance of "Amazing Grace," participants marched to the federal courthouse in downtown Columbia.

Participants were encouraged to bring school supplies and nonperishable food items for donation. There was also an opportunity to sign a petition to call on the U.S. Department of Justice to pursue federal charges against Zimmerman.

The group is upset that Zimmerman was acquitted of second-degree murder and manslaughter charges in the 2012 shooting death of Trayvon Martin.

The evidence points to self-defense. There should be no protest or march in honor of 17 year old who attacked a man and was beating with his fist.

Our news in Nashville starts each morning like yours does here in Columbia, typically with stories of black youths who were shot overnight, generally by other black youths. Thousands and thousands of these cases a year around the country. Why no outrage about their deaths and injuries? I find all this outrage tremendously hypocritical. I do not see how it matters if a black youth is shot by another young black man or a rich white man, until we all start saying the daily murders of black youths is unacceptable, and start protesting that, all the outrage from the thousands at these Trayvon protests will ring extremely hollow with knowledgable observers.
