Falling ice prompts bridge closure in Charleston

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Less than 24 hours after the Ravenel Bridge linking Charleston and Mount Pleasant was reopened after this week's snow and ice storm, it's been closed again.

Mount Pleasant police said late Friday morning they closed the bridge because of sheets of ice were falling on vehicles from the large diamond-shaped columns that support the cables. Ice also is falling from the cables. No injuries have been reported.

The bridge was closed for more than 40 hours earlier this week because of the storm.

The National Weather Service says black ice is still possible on some rural roads.

The weather service said warmer temperatures Thursday allowed some snow to melt. But that is leaving some roads wet and temperatures dropping below freezing created patchy sheets of ice on secondary roads.
