COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — State election officials say more than 13,000 people have obtained the new voter registration cards with their photos.

The State newspaper reported (http://bit.ly/1n2OqwT) reported the state began issuing the cards with a photo of the voter in December 2012.

Richland County leads the state, with nearly 2,300 of the photo ID voter cards issued.

South Carolina has nearly three million registered voters.

South Carolina will have its first statewide election under the new law in November, when voters will choose a governor, two U.S. senators, seven congressmen and 124 state House members.

Opponents have worried the photo requirement will disqualify poor and minority voters who might not have a photo ID.
