COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — The director of South Carolina's transportation department is resigning after a drunken driving arrest.

Robert St. Onge resigned Friday, citing personal reasons. Gov. Nikki Haley notified legislative leaders in a letter obtained by The Associated Press that Christy Hall will be acting secretary until she finds a permanent replacement.

Highway Patrol Sgt. Bob Beres says St. Onge was stopped about 8 a.m. Friday on Interstate 20. Beres says a breath test at the Lexington County jail registered his blood-alcohol level at 0.20 percent, more than twice the legal threshold.

The sheriff's department says St. Onge was released from jail Friday afternoon on his own recognizance.

Haley named the retired Army major general to lead the transportation department in January 2011.

No one answered the phone Friday at his home.

Let's hope the new 'Chief' will use his brain and work with all involved in the process of IMPROVING our deteriorating roads/interstates/ highways throughout the state of SC; know that this resident of Richland Co for 40 yearss would greatly appreciate whomever is responsible for the roads in the Greensprings subdivision at least fill the potholes and address the rough intersection of Greensprings Drive and Sheridan....huge pot holes and water standing all the time...made for HUGE PROBLEMS during the recent snow/rain/ice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
