Ex-Special Olympics coach gets 15 year sentence

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — A former Special Olympics volunteer coach has been sentenced to more than 15 years in prison for having sex with a 15-year-old athlete.

Cornelius Davis of Hopkins pleaded guilty in Charleston on Tuesday. He had been charged with criminal sexual conduct with a minor and two counts of assault and battery in Lexington and Richland counties.

Davis apologized to the victim as part of the plea. He also apologized to his own family.

Mount Pleasant police said Davis had been with the girl at least twice. He was accused of having sex with the teen at a hotel during the 2012 Special Olympics Winter Games.

Davis was a special education teaching assistant at Brookland-Cayce High School.
