SC panel approves proposed Charleston university
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — A bill to create a research university within the College of Charleston has advanced in the South Carolina Senate.
An education subcommittee on Wednesday unanimously approved the measure to establish the University of Charleston.
College of Charleston president-elect and current state Lt. Gov. Glenn McConnell says the research university will meet the workforce needs of the economy by offering degrees such as computer science.
McConnell says his vision is to protect the liberal arts college by making its curriculum relevant to the business community.
Commission on Higher Education director Richard Sutton questioned the intention and cost of creating a named comprehensive research university within the college.
A previous version of the bill to merge the College of Charleston and the Medical University of South Carolina was opposed by MUSC's board.
