Man charged with shooting trespasser in Camden

CAMDEN, S.C. (AP) — The Kershaw County sheriff says his deputies arrested a man who shot a trespasser on his land.

Sheriff Jim Matthews said 46-year-old James Andrew Davis of Greenville saw a pickup truck driving on land in Camden that he leases for a hunting club. At around 2 a.m. Saturday, Matthews says Davis fired several shots in the air as the truck was driving off the property. One shot went through the pickup's cab, injuring the victim.

The sheriff says property owners can't legally shoot at trespassers who aren't threatening them, especially if they are trying to leave the property.

Davis is charged with assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature. A phone listing couldn't be found, and court records didn't show an attorney.
