North Carolina, Virginia (WOLO)-- Three people are dead and at least 25 injured according to officials, after a massive pile up on Interstate 77 near the Virginia, North Carolina border.

The Virginia State Police said "excessive fog" in the Fancy Gap Mountain area, near the North Carolina border, caused at least 75 vehicles to crash in the southbound lanes of I-77.

Authorities say the first emergency call started coming in around 1:15 p.m.

The northbound lanes of I-77 were closed to allow emergency crews quick access to the scene.

Traffic was re-directed in both directions for clean up and assessment of the scene.

Lots of people did come to a stop the only problem was that it was just at the top of a hill and as soon as you started down, everyone was scattered every direction. I came to a stop for about 60 seconds then bamb a car ran in the back of us, luckaly no one got unbuckled, then another car ran the back of that one, then another, then another, then a mack truck came down through smashing people and cars. It was crazy. never scene anything like it and dont want to again

I've run into fog banks like this ... you're doing 65 in clear sunny weather, and within a couple of seconds, suddenly you can't see 30 feet. If you slow down you're likely to get slammed from behind, but if you keep going you could end up in a flaming wreck. The smart thing is to put on your flashers and slow down as soon as you see the fog ahead, while others can still see you. You'll probably get honks and dirty looks from the drivers behind you, but they'll be thanking you about 30 seconds later. Ideally, the cops would be out there slowing everybody down in advance, but these situations may develop too quickly for them to react. Truckers might save the day, if they could get on their radios and organize a rolling slow-down.
