COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) -- Friday morning the fight to end gun violence knew no one faith.

"I don't think that they care that much for the life of people," says one participant in the interfaith conversation on gun violence at First Nazareth Baptist Church in Columbia.

On a national level incidents like Aurora and Sandy Hook came to mind. But, here in the Midlands it's those like Monday's apartment shooting, Wednesday's murder in Lexington, even the gun the violence, caught on camera a few weeks ago, reportedly aimed at a Columbia police officer, that have many speaking out.

"Putting guns in the hands of people that don't have the knowledge of the consequences of using guns, especially our young people," says one participant

While some shared stories, others tried to find reasons.

"The violence on TV and in the media, in the video game industry, all of that, I believe it has to have some kind of impact," says another participant.

At eatch table, strangers -- many of different faiths -- found themselves together on a common issue, discussing in unison how faith plays a role in overcoming the violence.

"In what way does a gun promote the gospel of peace?,"says a participant

Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin, who hosted the event, says Friday's turnout speaks to the future.

"In this room today we had Conservatives and Liberals under one roof talking about ways in which we can help abate the violence that engulfs America,"says Mayor Benjamin.
