COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) -- While an apartment complex fire that displaced more than two dozen residents has been ruled an arson, officials say they want to thank the man they are hailing as a hero in the incident.

Columbia Fire Chief Aubrey Jenkins says on June 12th, someone deliberately set fire to The Club at Carolina Stadium Apartments on Catawba Circle in Columbia. The fire damaged 24 apartments and caused an estimated $400,000 in damage.

A surveillance photo shows a man knocking on the doors of residents the night of the fire alerting them to get out. Jenkins said without the quick-thinking of the person, the outcome may have been different and deadly.

"Had he not done that, we would be standing talking about the number of lives lost opposed to the fact that the building burned," said Jenkins.

If you have any information in this incident call the South Carolina Arson Hot Line at 1-800-92-ARSON, or the Fire Prevention Line at 803-545-3701.
