Beware: Tick Season is Here

By Rochelle Dean

It's starting to warm up and each day a little more humid, perfect weather for ticks to start making an appearance. USC Entomologist, Dr. Marguerite Fongillo says since we didn't have a very strong winter, this summer could be a more active season for the insects.

Fongillo has been studying the bloodsuckers for more than 30 years. According to her, the best thing you can do to protect yourself is stay alert, especially if you plan activities in fields or heavily wooded areas.

Frongillo suggests wearing a deet repellent on your skin and on your clothes to help ward off the insects. You should also wear light colored clothing and even tuck your pants into your socks to keep them from making contact with your skin.

If you are bitten try using a pair of tweezers to remove the tick from it's mouth parts without squeezing it. If it's been longer than a few days you should seek medical treatment to get antibiotics to prevent possible infection.
