COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO)-- Richland County Sheriff's Deputies have released the name of the man who, they say, fired on deputies during a chase Tuesday afternoon.

The suspect, now dead, is identified as 24 year old Adam Jurgen.

Deputies say around 1:30 Tuesday afternoon Jurgen assaulted a female inside and outside of a CVS on Broad River Road. The relationship between Jurgen and the victim is not known.

The victim, according to deputies, called 911 and when officers arrived Jurgen had already fled the CVS.

After patrolling a nearby neighborhood officers located Jurgen, who reportedly fired shots at deputies.

Jurgen, according to deputies, then fled to the Farrington Way Apartment complex just down the road.

Captain Chris Cowan with the Richland County Sheriff's Department says Jurgen entered the apartment, occupied at the time, through the front door and went out the back where he fired on deputies again. Deputy Sheila Aull was hit in the bulletproof vest.

"Her vest actually stopped the round. That vest actually saved her life," says Cowan

Deputy Aull was taken to a local hospital and is expected to be okay.

The identity or condition of the female in the domestic dispute has not been released.

Jurgen was pronounced dead at the scene.
