Columbia Police Chief Taking Leave of Absence

Columbia, SC (WOLO)--Columbia's police chief is stepping down again.

City Manager Teresa Wilson says Columbia Police Chief Randy Scott has requested a personal leave of absence for an indefinite period of time.

Wilson tells ABC Columbia News, Chief Scott made the request Monday to his superior, the request was then reviewed and granted Tuesday. The Chief's paid leave is effective immediately.

Wilson says there is no time limit for the amount of time Chief Scott is allowed to take off, nor is it information he offered when entering the request.

According to Wilson, the only reason given for the time off was to handle "personal matters".

Wilson says Deputy Chief Ruben Santiago has been named acting chief during chief Scott`s absence.

This is not his first time taking leave...back in January, Scott retired temporarily to take advantage of a logistical loop hole in order to receive retirement benefits.

Wilson says since the Chief is in good standing with the City, she has no reason to believe he will not return and resume his position as Columbia's Top Cop.

He will not be back. If stories are true that he has had a relationship going on it shows he has a lack of good judgement and isn't fit to be in charge. He has shown a lack of leadership dealing with the incidents in Five Points and the Vista. Where does the investigation stand in the robbery and shooting of the couple in the Vista? What has he accomplished with the fights and guns being fired in Five Points? He has refused to meet with the local merchants to talk about what his plans are. He and mayor have their heads in the sand on crime in the city. You can't get out of your car without being panhandeled by someone. We neeed someone with a longt erm plan not just looking for headlines and sound bites to look like you are doing something.
