Jury Selection to Begin in Brett Parker Case

Judge says defense has had ample time, moves on

By Monique Williams

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) -- Jury selection in the Brett Parker double murder case is expected to convene in the morning.

Pre-trial motions wrapped up in Richland County court today. The judge overruled several objections by Parker's defense attorneys, as they requested more time to review evidence. Defense attorneys alleged Parker's testimony to law enforcement officers the day of the crimes shouldn't be admitted as evidence because Parker was under mental duress when he gave a statement to police. Judge DeAndrea Bejamin also overruled that.

Meanwhile, surviving family members say the ordeal has been difficult, since three different families, intertwined by marriage and friendship, are impacted.

Brett David Parker, who told police he was a sports bookie, is accused in the 2012 double homicide of his wife Tammy Jo and mutual family friend and business associate, Brian Capnerhurst, at the Parkers' family home in Irmo last April. Solicitors claim Parker killed both his wife and Capnerhurst. The defense claims it was Capnerhurst who shot and killed Tammy Jo Parker prior to being killed, in self-defense, by Brett Parker.

The Parkers' 14-year-old daughter was present in court today. The couple also has a five year-old son. Court resumes tomorrow.
