Deputies Look to Prevent Home Break-Ins
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) -- "When people go out of town, they leave cars in the drive way or they leave lights on or things of that sort," says Senior Deputy Kevin Lawrence of the Richland County Sheriff's Department.
Those are things homeowners hope will deter criminals, but a simple call to the Richland County Sheriff's Department will go further.
Lawrence took us along for a walk through of a home in the Greenview neighborhood near Two Notch Road.
"Of course with it being summer time, just with any other community, people want to make sure their homes aren't burglarized, they want to make sure that they are safe while the are gone at work or while they are on vacation," says Deputy Lawrence
When conducting checks of homes, Community Action Team members, like Deputy Lawrence, have a checklist of what to look out for to make sure your home is safe from criminals.
"Something as simple as keeping your yard tidy, as far as keeping your trees trimmed above a certain height," says Lawrence
Lawrence says by simply calling the Richland County Sheriff's Department you can have a deputy check on your home every two to three hours while your'e away, at no charge to you.
If you are interested in having deputies check your home, call 1-803-576-3000.
