COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) -- The deadline to sign up for free credit monitoring has come and gone. Sunday, March 31, was the last day for victims of the Department of Revenue security breach to enroll for free credit monitoring services. However, there are still identity-saving steps you can take if you missed out.

The deadline to enroll in Experian's free, one year ProtectMyID credit protection plan, in the wake of the massive hacking incident, has passed.. That security breach at the South Carolina Department of Revenue last year overtook and exposed millions of South Carolina taxpayers' personal information to potential internet thieves.

However, Juliana Harris with the South Carolina Department of Consumer Affairs claims there are still credit and identity protection steps you can take.

"Vigilance is key," said Harris.

She says two ways you can be vigilant about safeguarding your identity is by setting up a fraud alert and a security freeze on your credit report.

With the security freeze it's basically putting your credit report on lock down, so it will stop anyone from accessing that report without your expressed permission. It doesn't expire and will stay on until you lift it."

The fraud alert is a watchdog over your credit report for 90 days.

"It alerts creditors pulling your report to take extra steps to verify your identity. It also entitles you to a free credit report from each credit reporting agency in addition to annual credit report, so that's good."

Harris also urges, note when your statements are due, actually read them and monitor them like your life depends on it. Because, in a case of identity theft, it very well could.

For those folks who did enroll in ProtectMyID in time, if you have children, you have until May 31st to enroll them in the Family Secure Plan. DOR’s Data Breach Assistance Team will also be available to assist individuals with the enrollment process; the team can be reached at (803) 898-7638.

The Data Breach Assistance Team was established to provide taxpayers with information regarding identity protection, and to coordinate with Experian to resolve any issues with enrollment or the fraud resolution services offered through ProtectMyID.
