COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) -- Word of the University of South Carolina's head baseball coach Ray Tanner's public announcement that he will soon lead the school's athletics department scores a home run with many fans.

The Carolina baseball legend says expect the same determination that has pushed the Carolina baseball program for the last 16 years to be channeled toward all student athletes. While addressing members of the press Friday afternoon, he says his career move really shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone. He claims he always knew he would trade in the diamond for the desk as an administrator.

He admits, though, it's bittersweet.

"I will miss putting on the uniform but you can rest assured I will be coaching where I will be sitting, maybe a little bit armchair style," said Tanner.

He officially assumes the Athletics Director position August 2nd.
