COLUMBIA, S.C. (CNN) - Some Ford Tauruses and Mercury Sables are being investigated for sticking throttles.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is looking at the 2000 to 2003 model years.

It's investigating a potential problem that can cause the engine to keep running as if the gas pedal were pressed, even when it's not.

For now, the agency is not recalling any vehicles, but is performing a preliminary investigation to determine the extent of the problem and its safety implications.

The agency was aware of 50 complaints when it opened the investigation.
