RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. (WOLO) - Some residents in Hopkins are raising a stink about a proposed sewer project in lower Richland County.

On Thursday, they presented a petition with more than five-hundred signatures to County Council, the US Department of Agriculture Rural Development and the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control.

That petition asks funding for the project be withheld, and the project be put on hold.

Residents who signed the petition claim it's too costly and would destroy their rural community.

You may remember public hearings for the proposed sewer project were held earlier this month.

Officials say they have been trying to fix a number of malfunctioning septic tanks and the threat it poses to some residents' water.

Also on their minds is growth in the area. Officials say the only way to control where businesses will come is to make sure the sewer infrastructure is acceptable.
