Jonathan Oh says goodbye

Here is what Jonathan said this morning on Good Morning Columbia:

Good Morning Columbia. For the past six and a half years, I had a chance to live out my childhood dream of serving my hometown of Lexington as a weatherman. This young kid, scared by an outbreak of tornadoes and touching down two miles from his house in 1994, became addicted to the power of weather. Little did I know that I would have the chance to start my career in this very city and get to spend more than half of my career here at ABC Columbia. I thought that I would eventually arrive here many years later, but God had a very different plan for me.

As I wrap up my time here on Good Morning Columbia, I have to say thanks to so many who have made who I am today. I thank God, whom I firmly believe has set my steps and my path for me. As broken as I am, without redemption through Jesus Christ, I would be lost and without hope. I am grateful that because of grace, I’m here today. I’m grateful that He has given me a chance to have fun in my work. I’m blessed beyond measure.

I thank my parents, Thomas and Yung Oh, who have loved me from even before my birth. Their steady hand and persistent love and discipline shaped me into the curious man that I am today. Despite the career path I have chosen, they guided me emotionally and spiritually, especially when I needed them the most. I thank my brother, Richard, whose intelligence is beyond what I can compare, and whose friendship has helped me through some of my darkest times.

I am grateful to my News Director Crysty Vaughan, who gave me this incredible chance to be paired up with Andy and have the time of my life. I am thankful to so many here who made this show possible, and many of them you have never even seen… Jason, Stephanie, Mandy, Chase, Davis, Summer, Crandall, Joy, and Rich, along with those I have worked with along the way... so many people who have taught me, and I can’t even begin to list them. I am especially grateful to Justin, Ben, Tim, Jim, Mike, Joe, Brooks, and Dave… people who have shaped and steered my career.

However, I can’t emphasize enough your partnership in our broadcast and in my career. This show started with little fanfare and promotion, and you probably stumbled onto it by accident when we started the show. There were even some people who thought this show was idiotic and useless, and yet, you believed in this show. You stuck with us, and now, if this show was a baby when we started, it would be a toddler. Thank you for all of your support and kind words that you have shown us during the past few years. It means so much that you were there. I hope that I kept up my end of the bargain during the past few years in supporting the philosophy of this program: bring you a smile in the morning, teach you something that you didn’t know, and be more than just a police blotter.

As I leave, many of you overwhelmed me through Facebook, Twitter, and e-mail. Our technological age has sped up our communication, but the price of that communication is more than money can ever buy. I am humbled than ever before that you gave this kid your precious time to share with you my love of weather and fun. You may be asking where I am going. I can’t reveal that quite yet, but I have an extraordinary opportunity to continue broadcasting weather to a much broader audience, but Columbia will always be home to me. I will keep my social media pages active, so I will let you know at the appropriate time, but as I depart, please continue to support Good Morning Columbia. This is just a transition and a passing of the baton. I leave you in good hands.

So thank you so much for what you have given me… your life and your time. This is just “toodle-loo” for now. You will see me again. Blessings to you, and I hope that you have a good day wherever you are.
